William Ernest Lister was born in Freckenham (Mildenhall Q1-1898 4A:841) son of William and Kate LISTER (née RADFORD).

1901 census... Aged 3, he was at Fordham Road, Freckenham with his father William [30]farm labourer, born Newfield, Durham, his mother Kate [25] born Freckenham, and sisters Lizzie R[5] and Edith [1] both born in Freckenham.

1911 census... Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was still in Freckenham with his parents, and new siblings, Ivy[9] and brothers Bertie [7], Victor [5] and Arthur [1], All born in Freckenham. All 7 children survived. Lizzie was a servant in Mildenhall with the Ungless family, Edith was staying with her grandparents Robert and Ann RADFORD, in Freckenham. Another brother, Robert Charles was born in August 1911 and a sister Evelyn L in 1916.




He enlisted in London
The 11th Battalion came under 54th Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division, landing in France in July 1915, ending the war near Le Cateau.
The Village of Crouy was used by 5th and 47th Casualty Clearing Stations, tending the wounded from the battles around Amiens. The cemetery also includes 42 graves brought in from a smaller cemetery at Riviere in 1919.
Without his Army records we cannot say where or when William was wounded. ("wounded" was from the War Graves Photographic Project), however battalion had been operating in the Albert area in mid to late May 1918.
